Have you ever met someone you instantly clicked with and the conversation just flowed seamlessly despite the constant, “what does that mean?”, that comes due to the diverse African languages we have in Zimbabwe and in Africa as a whole? That has been Yeukai and I since we met in 2013 and calling her by name sounds so out of character for me because she has always been, “Hunnie”, to me. And today I am beyond honoured to share the story of this phenomenal woman with you.

I remember the last time I saw her in 2015 when she finished her studies. She recently shared the picture we took together on that day and looking at it, I can’t help but smile; the hopes and dreams we shared back then and the roads we have travelled to get to where we are now. I look at those two young girls who had big dreams and were ready to take on the world with tears in my eyes, not the sad ones but those of pride, and I raise my glass to those girls and to women we’ve become.

Our businesses have recently collaborated on an amazing project and the result has not only been great but also awe inspiring. Now that you know who Hunnie is to me, get to know Yeukai, her business and our collaboration in the interview below.
Introduction and Background
1. Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and your background?
My name is Felicity Yeukai Mugenge, and I am the founder of YAT Guest House, a business rooted in my passion for hospitality and sharing authentic African experiences. I come from a rich cultural background and have always valued community, heritage, and excellence. Outside of my professional life, I am deeply committed to empowering women and building strong relationships, both in business and my personal life.

2. What inspired you to start a BnB, and how did you get into the hospitality industry?
The inspiration came from my love for hosting and creating spaces where people feel at home. I wanted to showcase the beauty and warmth of African culture, particularly Zimbabwean heritage, to travelers. Hospitality has always been close to my heart, and starting a BnB was the perfect way to blend my passion with a meaningful business.
3. How did you come up with the name for your BnB? Tell us the story behind the name.
The name “Yeukai African Taste” reflects my identity and mission. “Yeukai,” meaning “remember” in Shona, symbolizes honoring my roots and heritage. The “African Taste” represents the unique cultural experience I aim to provide through our hospitality, food, and design.
4. What are some of your passions and interests outside of running a BnB?
I enjoy community work, especially empowering women through my Lady Bird Network. I also have a creative side, whether it’s exploring African cuisine, writing poetry, or curating events. Fitness and self-improvement are key parts of my life as well.
The Journey to Starting a BnB
1. What motivated you to take the leap and start your own BnB?
I wanted to create a space where people could connect with Zimbabwean culture and feel the warmth of African hospitality. It was also about turning my passion into a business that could make a positive impact.

2. What were some of the biggest challenges you faced when starting your BnB, and how did you overcome them?
One of the biggest challenges was setting up without permanent staff and managing day-to-day operations while maintaining quality. I overcame this by relying on hired professionals and students for work-related learning. I also had to learn patience and perseverance, especially when dealing with financial constraints and delays.
3. How did you come up with the concept and design for your BnB?
The concept is inspired by royalty and African heritage. I wanted every aspect, from the room names to the décor, to reflect a sense of elegance and tradition. Each detail was carefully curated to create a space that feels both luxurious and authentically Zimbabwean.
Challenges as a Woman in the Industry
1. As a woman in a male-dominated industry, have you faced any specific challenges or biases?
Yes, there have been moments where my capabilities were questioned, and I’ve faced challenges in being taken seriously in negotiations.
2. How have you navigated these challenges, and what advice would you give to other women who are interested in starting their own BnB?
I’ve learned to remain confident, trust my instincts, and surround myself with supportive networks. To other women, I would say: believe in your vision, and don’t shy away from seeking mentorship or partnerships to help you grow.
3. Have you noticed any differences in how you are perceived or treated as a woman in the industry?
Sometimes I feel expectations are higher for women to prove themselves. However, I see it as an opportunity to lead by example and redefine those perceptions.
Victories and Successes
1. What have been some of your proudest moments or achievements as a BnB owner?
Launching signature events like the “African Royalty Night” and “Taste of Africa Culinary Workshop” has been incredibly fulfilling. Hearing positive feedback from guests about their experiences at YAT Guest House is always a proud moment.
2. How do you measure success in your business, and what are some of your goals for the future?
Success is about creating memorable guest experiences, maintaining high standards, and making a positive impact on the community. In the future, I hope to expand the YAT brand and host more cultural events.
3. Can you share any particularly memorable or heartwarming experiences you’ve had with guests?
One guest told me their stay at YAT Guest House was life-changing because it helped them reconnect with their roots. Stories like these remind me why I started this journey.
Hopes and Dreams
1. What are your long-term hopes and dreams for your BnB, and how do you see it evolving in the future?
I dream of YAT Guest House becoming a renowned destination for authentic African experiences, attracting guests from all over the world.
2. Are there any new projects or initiatives you’re excited about, or any plans for expansion or growth?
I’m excited about hosting more events like the “Shona Heritage Weekend” and expanding into additional properties that showcase other aspects of African culture.

3. How do you see your BnB making a positive impact on the community?
By creating jobs, supporting local artisans, and preserving cultural heritage, I hope YAT Guest House inspires pride in our community and offers opportunities for growth.
Words to the Youth
1. What advice would you give to young people who are interested in starting their own business or pursuing a career in hospitality?
